With a new year comes new projects and opportunities, and today we are proud to announce a collaborative effort between Adapt, Hieroglyphics and Souls of Mischief. As fellow bay area natives, and with the great respect we have for the music they have been creating for decades, it made alot of sense for us to do a project together. A homage to one of the greatest hip hop songs PERIOD (check the Video if you need to be Educated), the 93 til' tee was a representation of a classic ideal that meshes well with our ideas of personal advancement and continuing into the future, wherever that may take us.

FTA Report :Windmills & Coal Plants.

Today was a powerful day for the ESLI Youth Delegation!

We woke up to a rocky start, literally… but had two experiences whose positivity and hope balanced the disappointment from earlier this week. First, we had the pleasure of being invited on a small Greenpeace fishing boat out into the harbor! It was freezing, wet and sometimes sea-sick because of today’s bad weather – BUT they took us out to have an exclusing look at Denmark’s windmill farm!

It was definitely a sight to see – especially because what would be built RIGHT next to the windmills, but a coal-fired power plant!! The visuals were so great. How ironic, right?

Stay tuned for pics and videos (camera cords are in Ellen’s stolen suitcase!).

Then, we had the HONOR of joining a historic dinner hosted by the Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative, of 30-40 EJ leaders from the US that had made it to Copenhagen. There were folks from all over the country. Many of the people there were some of the most respected, inspirational leaders of the EJ movement – Dr. Robert Bullard (Clark Atlanta Univ. EJ Resource Center and EJ pioneer), Dr. Beverly Wright (Deep South Center for EJ in New Orleans), Tom Goldtooth (Indigenous Environmental Network), Michael Dorsey (Durban Group for Climate Justice), Felicia Davis (EJCC/Black Women’s Roundtable), Jose Bravo (Just Transition Alliance), Mari Rose Taruc (Asian Pacific Environmental Network), and many others. And the other folks that were there – about 10-12 of us – represented emerging environmental justice leaders, including Brower Youth Award winner Kari Fulton and the ESLI Youth Delegation! We were thankful for the knowledge and experience that those leaders brought into the room – and for the relationships we were able to start or support while there! There was definitely a strong spirit of solidarity and responsibility that was passed on to the new generation. A few of the older leaders made statements in our go-around introductions that targeted the youth that were there and recognizing their appreciation for our presence. Dr. Beverly Wright said tonight was the first time she felt satisfied that the movement they had created from the ground up was okay to pass on and to allow youth to inherit the work of the environmental justice community.

FTA Report :UN a people’s process?

Dear UN:

We are losing faith in you quickly. Please advise.

With love,
Future Leaders

http://beetlebabee.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/unitednations1.jpg

As Copenhagen boils with anxiety about today’s mass climate justice action at the Bella Center, all I can do is lower my head at the United Nations in complete disappointment.

Shutting out thousands of representatives of civil society from entering the UN conference this week, without showing a drop of compassion, has put me teetering on the edge of renunciation. We came to the UN conference to represent ourselves, as young leaders from the US and youth of color who believe that our presence here matters, and that the story we share can benefit the international community. What we faced Monday night and Tuesday morning, standing in the incredible line of 2nd week registrants waiting to get their badges – waiting a total of 7 hours in freezing temperatures, was offensive. And, from what we found out, we were lucky that it was only 7 hours – people we interviewed had stood for 9 hours on Day 1, only to be turned away on Day 2’s attempt after another 3-4 hours. A pregnant women, a high-profile expert consult to the Mozambique delegation, waited both days only to be forced to leave because of fear of her and her baby’s health. And not once did we receive clear updates on our potential to register as we stood in line. Not once did they show any compassion to the thousands of dollars and false hopes these thousands of people had spent to make it merely 20-30 feet from the Bella Center, only to be told that the UN could not accommodate numbers anywhere near to what was expected. Many got on early flights home.

I write this post as an indignant member of the next generation of climate justice leaders, who had nevertheless held onto her faith in an entity who has practically failed to address climate change for the past 15 years of the UNFCCC’s operations. The democracy here in Copenhagen is quickly crumbling before me, before the eyes of the two ESLI youth delegates that came with me and before the rest of the international community. Not to mention, police raids and preemptive arrests targeting young people has turned Copenhagen into a place of fear. Access to UN climate negotiations was already assumed to be limited to civil society – but now we know that we are blatantly not welcome.

For better or for worst, I’ve also seen in the past 48 hours the prolific organizing that’s happening on the outside. Monday night I participated in a meeting of grassroots groups from both the Global North and Global South, organized by Movement Generation, that pulled together powerful movement building voices together to strategize. Yesterday, environmental justice groups from the US drafted a letter to Obama that calls for just, urgent action on climate that will be delivered in a press conference at the US Embassy on Thursday. Klimaforum – the alternative “People’s Summit” – is rich with information, speakers and real people power that outshines UN side events 50 times over – and it’s free, accessible and well-organized. This is where we’ll spend most of our time for the rest of the week.

But where does this leave us, still depending on the UNFCCC to come to an agreement to protect our future? An issue so deeply embedded in economic injustice and the oppression of developing countries and impacted communities – how can we believe in a just, acceptable solution from such an undemocratic, non-transparent decision making body? As a young activist and leader, as well as a mentor of other young leaders, I stand horribly disappointed at the UN and fearful of our loss of faith in it as an institution. What now?

FTA APPROVED EVENT: December 7th: Tell Chevron “Our Climate Is Not Your Business!”

December 7th: Tell Chevron “Our Climate Is Not Your Business!”

On the first day of international climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, join the Mobilization for Climate Justice at the headquarters of one of the world’s worst climate polluters to tell them “our climate is not your business!”
When: Monday, December 7th, 7am
Where: Chevron Corporate Headquarters 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road, San Ramon, CA
How to get to Chevron’s headquarters (by car, carpool, or public transit)

We need volunteers who are willing to risk arrest to make a difference and send a clear message to Chevron. If you’re thinking about participating in non-violent civil disobedience at this action, come to the orientation/action planning meeting on December 6th (4-7pm) and attend a non-violent direct action training if you are new to civil disobedience.

Why Chevron? Chevron is one of the world’s worst climate criminals. Below are all the reasons why we’re targeting Chevron and asking them to stop blocking climate solutions: Chevron publicly rejects science-based emissions targets:

  • Chevron publicly opposes the Kyoto Protocol.
  • Incoming CEO John Watson has publicly stated that reducing greenhouse gas emissions 20% below 2005 levels by 2020 is not possible, and current CEO David O’Reilly has spoken out against the science-based target of reducing emissions 80% by 2050. See article

Can you join us this Monday, the first day of the historic international climate change negotiations in Copenhagen? At this critical moment, join us in exposing Chevron, one of the world’s worst climate criminals, and telling them “our climate is not your business!” With U.S. obstruction of the international climate change negotiations, we need to push back corporations like Chevron – which continues to lobby against real solutions to climate change while investing in ever-dirtier sources of crude oil.

The California Air Resources Board this past week made public the list of the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the state. The single largest California emitter last year was the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, which emitted 4.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. Fourth was the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, near Los Angeles.

We especially need people who are willing to risk arrest to make the action effective and to send a clear message the world is waiting to hear; that people in the US support climate justice and real solutions. If you’re considering nonviolent civil disobedience on December 7th, send an email to mcjbay@gmail.com, attend the meeting from 4-7pm on December 6th (details below) and attend the non-violent direct action training on December 6th if you are new to civil disobedience or if you want to get more oriented. Even if you can’t risk arrest, we need you to demonstrate your support for the action and for climate justice solutions.
